    • 12.13.2010 Commented on Redistributing my tax rebate: an update (updated) My vote is for the Michael Causer Foundation. We need more support for young LBGT people - many of them are thrown out by their families, and can then be at risk of death on the streets thanks to homophobia....

    • 06.25.2010 Commented on Friday puzzle, no.23 (Thursday edition) Fantastic Friday puzzle! I love linguistic puzzles. I spent hours on this yesterday but still can't work it out. Will keep trying, 'cause it's a matter of English-teacher pride now. :P...
    • 05.20.2010 Commented on Giving birth at home in New York Worrying, that. My sister just gave birth at home, and it seems she had a much better experience there than in hospital with her first child. The medicalisation of childbirth is an interesting (and frightening) social development that has much...

    • 05.08.2010 Commented on Analysing the Lib Dem position 1 I agree that it's undemocratic. It's also built into our electoral system that this is what happens in the unusual event of a hung Parliament. Our system itself is undemocratic. You can't have it both ways. Either we get electoral...
    • 05.08.2010 Commented on Revisiting my #ge10 prediction As I recall, my (serious!) prediction was Tories the largest party but without enough seats to form a government. I am, so far, not overwhelmingly excited that I got it right....
    • 05.05.2010 Commented on An economist as Chancellor? Bad idea I completely disagree. Brown was a great economic mind. He isn't a great politician, but he knew what to do with the economy. I want economic thinkers for Chancellors. I also want teachers for Education Secretaries (the mess the government...

Hi Jigna - I think you're right to a point in suggesting shop floor experience is useful, and one well-worn bit of management advice is to spend some time on the shop floor to get that perspective. What I'm suggesting is that that isn't a prerequisite: i.e. that you have to have that experience. And I've gone further above by suggesting that sometimes that direct experience can create biases that aren't useful in a role you may need to do higher up an organisation. In my view, you need to know enough about a topic and have enough skill to...

An interesting and useful contribution to the debate. However, in the last part of your post, you write: "So a party with the support of just over 1 in 7 of the electorate is likely to determine who forms the next government. Some will think of this as making up for all the power the Lib Dems have previously deserved but never got because of an unfair electoral system. I just think of it as a peculiarity and fairly undemocratic outcome of our current electoral system." Does this makes any sense? Are you suggesting that, in a supposedly more democratic,...

Naomi - I'm not saying I have a problem with the position the Lib Dems find themselves in. Far from it - if a hung parliament is the result of the general election (which it is) and means they hold the balance of power (which it does), I'm all for it! John - thanks for your comment. I'm talking solely about the current system, and suggesting that some people will say "Aha - we've never had power before, but this time we do!" It is peculiar in the sense that hung parliaments are unusual, and it's undemocratic in the sense...

Hi Naomi - yes, sadly, I think you're right... it's not exactly fighting fire with fire, is it?...
