Thanks Dhara. I completely agree with your last comment. Forthwith, I shall make it an objective of all of my staff to bring cakes and biscuits to the office... If they're not keen, I'll say it was your idea! ;)...

Hey Rich, apologies for taking so long to get round to commenting. Option A every time...there are many things I'd cut before resorting to cutting out the tea and coffee. The first place I worked had free tea and coffee which I suppose at some level I just took for granted. Since then I've worked in places where you've had to bring in your own tea/coffee, where you've paid a partial contribution, where you've paid for all costs. When I started where I currently am and was shown the free tea and coffee stash I was elated! Not because I...

I agree that it's undemocratic. It's also built into our electoral system that this is what happens in the unusual event of a hung Parliament. Our system itself is undemocratic. You can't have it both ways. Either we get electoral reform or this is the way of things. I'm in favour of the former, and agree that this isn't the way to organize a Parliament....

However, in the last part of your post, you write: "So a party with the support of just over 1 in 7 of the electorate is likely to determine who forms the next government. Some will think of this as making up for all the power the Lib Dems have previously deserved but never got because of an unfair electoral system. I just think of it as a peculiarity and fairly undemocratic outcome of our current electoral system." Does this makes any sense? Are you suggesting that, in a supposedly more democratic,...

Great blog, great comments. I think we are still pretty early in the adoption curve here; there is a certain amount of market making to be done (making vol orgs realise what they can do with greater access to data), whilst clearly the arena is still too technical for drive-by users such as me (there was a great blog recently about mapping public toilets that highlighted this). Dave talks about what we at NCVO are doing. The Open Data agenda for us is going to be an iterative process, one where we may well need to take some deep breaths...
